چکیده

We characterize a generalization of discounted logistic choice that incorporates a parameter to capture different views the agent might have about the costs and benefits of larger choice sets. The discounted logit model used in the empirical literature is the special case that displays a “preference for flexibility” in the sense that the agent always prefers to add additional items to a menu. Other cases display varying levels of “choice aversion,” where the agent prefers to remove items from a menu if their ex ante value is below a threshold. We show that higher choice aversion, as measured by dislike of bigger menus, also corresponds to an increased preference for putting off decisions as late as possible. ∗A previous version of this paper was titled “Recursive Stochastic Choice.” We thank Steve Berry, Eddie Dekel, Glenn Ellison, Phil Haile, Igal Hendel, Paulo Natenzon, Ariel Pakes, Wolfgang Pesendofer, Phil Reny, Satoru Takahashi, Jan Werner, and Joel Sobel and four anonymous referees for helpful comments and conversations, and Mira Frick for expert research assistance. Revealed Preferences for Risk and Ambiguity

We replicate the essentials of the Huettel et al. (2006) experiment on choice under uncertainty with 30 Yale undergraduates, where subjects make 200 pairwise choices between risky and ambiguous lotteries. Inferences about the independence of economic preferences for risk and ambiguity are derived from estimation of a mixed logit model, where the choice probabilities are functions of two random ...

Uncovering the contribution of travel time reliability to dynamic route choice using real-time loop data

Travel time reliability has generally been surmised to be an important attribute of transportation systems. In this paper, we study the contribution of travel time reliability in travelers’ route choice decisions. Traveler’s route choice is formulated as a mixed-logit model, with the coefficients in the model representing individual traveler’s preferences or tastes towards travel time, reliabil...

The nested consideration model: Investigating dynamic store consideration sets and store competition

The nested logit model has been widely used to study nested choice. A typical example of such nested choice is store patronage and brand choice. An important limitation of the nested logit model is that it assumes that all alternatives at both levels of the nest are available in the choice set of the consumer. While there is a wide literature on the incorporation of restricted choice sets into ...

Alternative Models for Capturing the Compromise Effect in Multiattribute Logit Choice Models

The compromise effect denotes the finding that brands gain share when they become the intermediate rather than an extreme option in a choice set (Simonson 1989). Despite the robustness and importance of this phenomenon, choice modelers have neglected to incorporate the compromise effect within formal choice models and to test whether such models outperform the standard value maximization model....
